Forest FM were Runners Up (with a highly commended citation) in the Radio Academy award for the Station of the Year* in the South.

*The Awards - a series of regional events designed to honour radio stations broadcasting to a population of 300,000 or under - are a prestigious recognition of the vital role that independent radio plays in the UK . Forest FM was one of three stations nominated across the south of England and was up against Isle Of Wight Radio and Andover Sound. As station manager Steve Saville said "We had to submit a 30 minute compilation of clips from our output - and then supply a one hour segment "as broadcast", the output time chosen randomly by the Academy".

The ceremony - held at Bournemouth University - was hosted by Professor Sean Street , director of The Centre for Broadcasting History Research, together with veteran regional radio presenter, Matt Hopper. Professor Street noted that "For the first time - we've added an extra award, a Highly Commended citation for a station that represents all that's good about truly local radio". Forest FM was praised for its wide variety of music output, it's local focus and its championing of the community it serves. Receiving the Award, Steve Saville commented "We were just delighted to be nominated - thrilled to be here! But to be recognised - that's something really special "

*** LISTENING FIGURES ***

In January 2008 we commissioned an independent survey, carried out by students from Bournemouth University. People were questioned at random on the streets of Verwood about their listening habits. We were really pleased with what we discovered.

90% of people questioned had heard of Forest FM

48% of people questioned said they listened to Forest FM

To put these figures in perspective, any large local commercial station would be very happy with a listening figure of 20%. We believe our truly local service and knowledge of our area, combined with our music policy is something that attracts Listeners. There are 16,000 people in Verwood itself and around 50,000 people in our immediate transmission area so we are estimating we have at least 20,000 Listeners. Add another 11,000 people per month listening online and we have some pretty impressive figures. And by the way - we also asked people what they listened to if they didn't listen to Forest FM and most people told us - Radio 2, Wave and Radio Solent. Average age of those surveyed was 45. Most listened to us in the car with many listening at home as well. So - what can we say ? We say Thank You for listening !
